When you decide to the Cape peninsula and head up the coast northwards, pay a visit to a Namibia tourism information centre before you leave. Ask about car rental in Windhoek, cnr Sam Nujoma & Stein Str and if needed enquire about 4x4 rentals for the more remote areas you want to visit. You can get advice on the road conditions in the areas you plan to explore. Due to the length of some of the distances between tourist site and places of interest it is well worth asking if your vehicle has extra fuel and water tanks, for the long journey. When in Namibia remember the locals are also a mine of useful information. For example you must be careful at dusk when driving on the outlying roads as wild animals and domestic animals can suddenly appear on the road ahead. Once you are off the major hi-ways road, road signs are not as apparent and it is better to arrange for the game lodge to send someone to meet at a predestined lace rather than going it on your own. There are certainly some remote regions of Namibia, which require you hire a tour guide who is familiar with the local surroundings and has a substantial knowledge of the terrain conditions.
