Cape Cross Sea Colony is just up from Henties bay and when you first experience it seems like every seal in the world has descended on this piece of coast line. it was only when guano, discovered in 1895 that people settled in Cape Cross used as fertilizer. As early as 1486 Diego Cao landed and erected a limestone cross in honour of King Johannes of Portugal This out-back settlement existed because of the profits made from guano and the seals for their meat and fur. So great was their greed though they virtually wiped out the seals and exhausted the guano supplies.
