Get a car rental in Pretoria and head out to the outskirts of Pretoria, where stands the lofty Voortrekker Monument. This South African heritage site is a must for visitors to gain a better understanding of South Africa. This monolithic edifice is an icon for the Afrikaans people. It is testament to the brave men, women and children who trekked from the Cape to free themselves from the then tyrannical British rule. A circle of stone wagons and carved relief work show the trials and tribulations these early pioneers had to endure while travelling through the harsh African bush veldt. Battles with local heathen tribesmen are graphically displayed and one can only stand back in admiration for a people who managed to carve out and build a European civilization deep within the African continent.
Huge events are held here every year when thousands of Afrikaaners come to pay homage and respect to their respective forefathers. he Amphitheatre can hold up to thirty thousand spectators and is used for Boeremusiek concerts and large church gatherings. Once inside the monument, you can visit the Hall of Heroes with its magnificently carved marble frieze and go through to the second level in the Monument, known as the Cenotaph Hall. This great hall has a sombre cathedral feel to it and can hold up to a thousand people.
