Relive the history of Pretoria at the Voortrekker monument

A visit to The Voortrekker Monument Pretoria or Tswane as it is now known is necessary visit for newcomers to South Africa. The Voortrekker monument in Pretoria is testimony to all the brave Christian men, women, and children who were the pioneers of this great country. They left the Cape where they were persecuted under British rule, from 1835 to 1854. They faced many dangers in the wild, untamed African bush and had to fend off hordes of heathens who attacked them at every turn as they made their way into the hinterland of Africa

The monument stands over 40 meters tall and has 360-degree view of the surrounding suburbs. Each aspect of the building has a historic or symbolic significance. 27 panels depict the story of the Great Trek from 1835 to 1852. Scenes depicting their daily lives while travelling across Africa in the great wagons. Inside the monument on the lower floor is Cenotaph Hall (empty tomb). Here every year on 16 December every year the sun shines down through a small hole in the centre of the Voortrekker Monument roof, onto the Cenotaph, lighting up the inscribed words: ""Ons vir jou Suid Africa"" (""We for thee, South Africa"").
