When searching for carhire in a small town, where there are no car rental companies, first be sure to check out the local town's garage for cheap rental cars, the mechanics there have most probably worked on everyone’s personal vehicle and know what is available.
Failing that, approach some of the shop owners or speak to the locals at the pub. South Africans are helpful at the best of times and the people in small farming communities and towns are exceptionally helpful and friendly. Many of the farm folk may be obliging enough to rent cars to you. The local establishments will give the run down on cheap hotels in the area and of course some of the local gossip. The relaying of directions may be a little tricky in some case as they be translated from Afrikaans first so something can get lost in the translation and you find yourselves out in the dark bush as the sun is setting. The bigger petrol stations sell road maps but ideally a GPS system; with Garmin maps would be invaluable.
The major freeways are well signposted although the smaller agricultural roads and sand roads are not. So heed the barman directions about the left turn at the twisted tree. Have your Garmin review handy in your carhire just in case.
