If you want one of the best wildlife experiences in South Africa then head to the Kruger National Park. It’s one of the most famous national parks in the world and is Africa’s oldest established park, first opening its gates in 1898.
It’s located in the far northeastern corner of South Africa and spans an impressive 2 million hectares of bushveld. Together with Mozambique and Zimbabwe it forms part of a peace park known as the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park. There will ultimately be no fences in the park, so the game can wander freely across these borders.
The nearest airport is the Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport, from here you can hire a car and within half an hour be at Numbi Gate - an entry point into the south of the park. There are self-drives or guided tours, multi-day walking safaris or bush walks, mountain bike trails and even a golf course where you can see giraffe walking past as you tee off.
The game at the park is unique – there are 147 species of mammal, 507 different species of bird, and a countless number of fish, amphibian and reptile species. Nowhere else in the world do you get to see the Big 5, the Little 5 and the Birding 6, in such a breathtaking setting. Besides the game, what makes this park world class is the accommodation. It ranges in style from 5-star luxury to rustic; in price, from expensive to budget; and in experience, from comfortable chalets to overnight bush hides.
This wildlife sanctuary, lying in the heart of the Lowveld, is one of the best-maintained parks in Africa, and as South Africa’s flagship national park - it is the ultimate safari experience. Have an outdoor shower, a braai in the bush and sip on a cocktail as you watch the sun set over a magnificent day, and then fall asleep to the sound of lions grunting in the distance. This is Africa at its very best.
