The sheer joy of Johannesburg is that within 40km’s from the city you can be in the mountains.

The countryside is the most peaceful place to be after a drive to a match in the city. The Magaliesberg mountain range is literally “old as the hills”. Not only have many ancient fossils found at Sterkfonetin, Caves, but also in more, recent times the areas of the Boer war (when British Imperial troops tried to force their way into the hinterland of the Transvaal.

The British forces took to their slash and burn tactics to drive farmers out of the area so that they could no longer re-supply the fleet footed “Kommando” of the Boer forces. Numerous soldiers lost their lives were lost in the fighting in the Magaliesberg valleys, at Kommando Nek, Nooitgedacht and in many of the deep gorges and high crested slopes along the mountainside. All over the area remnants of these clashes can be seen. Many forts and blockhouses were built at strategic points in the mountains and some can still be seen today, the most prominent being the fort overlooking Kommando Nek and the Hartebeespoort Dam built in early 1901.
