Discover the magic of the Magaliesberg Mountains, just an hour’s drive away from Johannesburg or Pretoria. The village of Magaliesburg lies nestled at the foot of the Magaliesberg mountain range. Being so close to the hustle and bustle of Johannesburg, this sleepy village and the surrounding countryside and mountains are a favourite weekend getaway for city dwellers and a great tourist destination.

The Magaliesberg offers an astonishing array of things to do, in a region renowned for its natural wonders. This is where the Sterkfontein caves are situated, yielding up clues to our past and the very origins of humankind – the pre-human skull of “Mrs Ples” was discovered here. The Cradle of Humankind World Heritage site is world famous for being the richest and the most productive palaeo-anthropological site in the world. A collection of dolomitic limestone caves guard their fossilised treasures, but two caves, Sterkfontein and Wonder Cave are open to the public. The Maropeng Visitor’s Centre provides a glimpse into our fascinating past with a completely interactive and self-guided exhibition suitable for all ages.

Tucked away in the mountains you will find the tranquil Mountain Sanctuary Park, a private reserve where you can reconnect with nature, and spend quiet contemplative time. Strict noise rules ensure that the reserve remains a sanctuary to refresh your soul. Day visitors can bring a picnic and head off for a stroll, or simply enjoy the crisp mountain air, read in the cool shade of the trees, and laze around the beautiful pool. Chalets, cabins and campsites provide a range of accommodation. The energetic can take on a more strenuous hike, and will be amply rewarded by sparkling mountain pools, extraordinary rock formations and breathtaking views.

If country shops and lunch stops appeal to you, the Magalies Meander, provides a variety of attractions and events, from art galleries to sporting activities and restaurants. For country shopping at its best, visit Western Cane Trading, a charming establishment which sells wood, cane and wrought iron furniture and lots of other gifts and goodies besides. After a leisurely stop for tea and cream scones in the tea-garden you may be tempted to linger a while longer and stay overnight in one of the delightful “Jameson cottages” in the grounds. Avid golfers can even get a bit of practice in on the driving range.

Any number and variety of places to stay can be found all over the Magaliesberg area, from romantic country lodges, self-catering cottages and campsites, to family resorts catering especially for children. Whether you are seeking tranquillity and peace, or adrenalin rushing adventure, you will find it here. From abseiling to zip-lining, art to zebra-spotting, you will be spoilt for choice. Game spotting at Nooitgedacht Nature Reserve, a sunrise drift over the mountains in a hot air balloon, fly-fishing in the pristine Magalies River, skimming through the forest treetops on a Canopy Tour, mountain biking, rock climbing and horse-riding, the magical Magaliesberg has it all – and more.
