After booking a car for the travelling at a car rentals kiosk at Johannesburg O R Tambo Airport and pay a visit to the Museum of Military History in Joburg. The Museum of Military History, Johannesburg is adjacent to Johannesburg Zoo. So if you have walked through the zoo and still have time to spare, why not pay an interesting visit to Museum of Military History. The museum was opened and christened the South African National War Museum in 1947. Later in 1975, it became the South African National Museum of Military History. This museum is chock-a-block with weapons, uniforms military aircraft, medals and war memorabilia from both Axis and Allied forces. The sword display is impressive, with some swords dating back to the Crimean War. The whole family can enjoy some of the exhibits and watch children clambering over the tanks and armoured vehicles. Huge war machine planes brightly painted in there respective squadron colours look ready to take off. A small pocket submarine, looks out of place on dry land. It also seems surreal that men actually travelled under water in it.

South Africa began late in the preservation of war memorabilia unlike England that had created the Imperial War Museum, after the First World War.

The museum also houses an impressive compilation of journals, archive material, and old war photos.
