The beautiful Outeniqua Mountains Range is a rugged nearly impassable range of dense bush, old forests, and giant ferns. Just over this mountain stretches the desolate semi-desert landscape of the Little Karoo. Some early “Trekkers” made the strange decision to leave the hospitable and beautiful strip of land we now call the Garden route and enter into the “Klein” (small) Karoo. The question to ask is of course, Were this mixed bunch of early settlers that upset with British colonial rule that they entered the desert like some new Moses and his tribe to find better pastures? They set out in the giant ox-wagons over the Cradock Pass into the harsh semi desert climate. Considering the day-to-day difficulties that people experienced at the time in history, we can only wonder at the true purpose of the departure from a living Eden to an arid desert.
The Outeniqua Nature Reserve is spread out over 38 000 hectares. The name Outeniqua is thought to be derived from that of a Khoisan tribe once resident in the mountains and means ""they who bear honey"".
There is a diverse range of vegetation, from ancient tree to the incredible fynbos family of plants. Animals to watch out for include the delicate klipspringer and the shy rhebuck. The beautiful Fish eagle with its unmistakable cry and even black eagles can be seen along this little bit of Eden.
