George is almost in the middle of the beautiful strip of coast called the Garden route. The Outeniqua Mountains form a backdrop for this coastal city. The actual Nature Reserve is spread out over a few thousand hectares and has some of the finest hiking and walking trails in the country. The name Outeniqua is thought to be derived from” Khoisan” tribe language and means ""they who bear honey"". Little is known of these small indigenous people who walked along the beaches all the way to far away Cape Town.

While in the area you can try a bit of your own exploring by going to a car rental in George Airport and getting yourself a hire car for your expeditions’. Ask at the rental desk about maps of the local area and you will discover many different locales that are only a short drive in either direction of George to visit. The quaint cove of Victoria bay is worth a visit and then head down to the evening market held in Sedgefield. Locals from the entire area descend on the town to sell artworks, homemade jams and wares. There is always live music and the surrounding bars and restaurants are a buzz of activity. This small seaside town is at the bottom of Phantom pass and is just off the main freeway. It also has its only secluded beach, to take sunset walks on.
