Home to a range of art galleries – Buffalo City is full of undiscovered treasures, with something to suit everyone’s tastes. There is a mix of local, international, historical and contemporary art that reflects the beauty and diversity of the people in South Africa.

East London is the birthplace of some famous South African artists in Norman Catherine, Cecil Skotnes and Raymond Andrews.

Your first port of call should be the Ann Bryant Art Gallery, a mere 15-minute drive in your rental car from the East London Airport. When Mrs Ann Bryant died she bequeathed her beautiful home to the City of East London as an art gallery. This gallery now proudly carries her name and includes a valuable collection of her pictures. It is a spectacular, elegant old building with stained glass windows and houses an excellent permanent collection of local art. There are South African paintings and sculptures ranging from 1880 to today. Contemporary, emerging young Eastern Cape artists are promoted in this gallery, but there are also works by established international artists. In an attempt to let the entire community enjoy the art – entrance is free. There is a restaurant next door where you can enjoy a cup of coffee in the tranquil and peaceful garden.

The Malcolm Dewey Gallery is 20 minutes from the airport and contains art from both local and national artists, including works by the owner. Right next to the Vincent Park Shopping Centre is the Vincent Art Gallery - it houses fine art, sculptures, ceramics, precious stones and jewelry. They also regard themselves as framing specialists. The Marlene Neumann Centre for Photography and Light has an art gallery with a permanent display of unique black and white fine art photography. There is a huge Fig Tree in the tranquil art garden that overlooks this ultra-modern gallery. This is a definite stop for anyone who appreciates great art.
