If you remember to pack your 9 iron before your toothbrush, then the “Golf Coast” is your ideal holiday destination.

KwaZulu-Natal’s South Coast begins in the holiday hub of Amanzimtoti and stretches all the way down to Port Edward. This scenic, relaxed stretch of coastline boasts golden beaches, blue lagoons, rocky coves, sub-tropical forests and, of course, a comprehensive selection of golf courses to suit any handicap. In short: 120kms of golfing paradise.

Here are five that are rated in the Top 100 Greatest SA Golf Courses in 2011 according to Golf Digest:

Selbourne Golf Estate is a 90-minute drive in your hired car from the King Shaka Airport. Considered the “Augusta of South Africa”, this old dairy farm has been converted into one of the country’s finest golf estates.

The hilly Umdoni Park Golf Course is regarded as one of the hidden gems of the Golf Coast, with the front nine holes running alongside the sea, giving remarkable views.

The San Lameer Golf Course is rated 49th by Golf Digest and is one of the most picturesque courses in Southern Africa. It’s a tough challenge, with water on 12 of its 18 holes, so bring extra balls.

One of the most popular courses on the lower South Coast is about 150km from the King Shaka Airport. The Southbroom Golf Course is tough and tight, but has breathtaking views over the ocean.

Just outside Port Edward is the Wild Coast Golf Course, which just misses out a top 10 ranking. It’s a short course but created to test the skill of any golfer. With well-maintained lawns and stunning sea views, it’s one of the most beautiful on the Golf Coast.

With perpetually sunny weather and long hours of sunshine, the South Coast is the ideal year-round holiday destination for the golf enthusiast. Tee off with the warm African sun on your back and a welcoming breeze blowing off the Indian Ocean. These are the essentials for a truly memorable golfing holiday.
