Simon's Town, more than just a naval base in Cape Town

ShareThis

Cape Town Airport underwent a face-lift for the recent international soccer event. Inclusions in this rejuvenation were the new eatery hub and the easily accessible car rental kiosks. The airport has more of an international feel about it now.

The weary travellers will find the new layout easier to navigate, when it comes to baggage collection and other services like car rental. The refurbished parking facilities afford more parking for bays for peak times and allow for easy access to and from the freeway.

Although the locals will tell you that you can’t get lost in Cape Town because the famous flat topped mountain can be seen from almost everywhere. While this may be comforting it is advisable to ask one of the friendly staff at the car hire office for a map. Get one of the Cape metropolis and surrounds before you leave.

The airport is ideally situated for the visitor and it is only a short drive to most of the tourist sites and places of interests. The N1 freeway heads south towards the city and north towards the Worcester mountain range, while the N7 leaves the city and follows the West coast up towards Saladhana Bay. Should you wish to visit Simon’s Town with its incomparable “quaintness”, the M5 free-way will get you there. This well sign posted free-way curves around the Table Mountain. The route to Simon’s Town takes you past what are some of the older neighbourhoods, in Cape Town known as the Southern Suburbs and that is where you will find the South African Navy Museum. Here you can view Ships, submarines, weapons, equipment, the people who serve and served.

At the Simon’s Town turn off, the complete opposite view of the sea-line, greets you. This vista is normally obscured by Table Mountain. Follow the lower main road towards the naval base. This curvy road hugs the beach on the left side and there are houses that precariously hang onto the cliff on the opposite side. This whole strip is a bohemian paradise peppered with art shops, retro furniture and curio emporiums.

Be sure to visit “The Brass Bell” and "The Trading Post' Antique shop, as a prerequisite, when going to Simon’s Town. They have fish so fresh it was caught that morning. This virtual landmark of a sea-cove bar and eatery, is built on the shoreline. So don’t be alarmed when you notice waves come racing towards you as you sip your first beer. You can however relax as the wave’s journey is as thankfully cut short by thick glass windows
